The American photographer Phil Borges’ portraits introduce women from around the world who, together with CARE, are bringing change to their community despite the adversity of their situations. Their bravery and determination have turned them from victims into leaders, and their achievements inspire hope.
Together with CARE, these women are fighting against excision in Ethiopia, trafficking of women in Bangladesh, and campaigning in favour of microcredits, to promote economic empowerment.
This award-winning collection of photos has already been shown at the United Nations headquarters in New York, and in major galleries in San Francisco, Chicago, Berlin and Bonn.
The 20 photos on show here are taken from the book of the same name: "Women empowered: inspring change in the emerging world", with an introduction by Madeleine Albright who says: "This is a book about hope, based on reality."
Roger Willemsen, Anne Will, Cosma Shiva Hagen and Rita Süssmuth also contributed to this book.
