It's not always easy for members of the younger generation to position themselves for eventually taking the helm of the family business. Should I work there or not? Should I pursue a project outside the family business? Should I take over the business - and own it one day - or not?
From our experience of working with families in business, we know that it is hard to map your future when you leave school and that it is normal to find it difficult to express your aspirations. Over the last 10 years, Banque de Luxembourg has developed some highly successful programmes to put young people in the best possible position to express their concerns and formulate their questions about the family business.
"Every year, we invite young people from families in business who have not yet started working in the business to participate in the Summer Academy. The latest edition took place at the end of August, bringing together 12 young people aged 26 to 33 from Luxembourg, Switzerland and France. During the four-day programme, they were able to ask a host of questions, discuss their concerns, and listen to personal accounts from former participants and seasoned entrepreneurs who have been there themselves," says Anne Goedert, Family Practice Adviser at Banque de Luxembourg.
The main aim of the programme is for them to appreciate that they are not the only ones grappling with these questions.
Then, it's about giving them the tools to move forward on their own path... which may be outside the family business.Anne Goedert

The next Summer Academy is due to be held at the end of August 2023.
