To coincide with the publication of our financial results for 2022, Luc Rodesch, Member of the Executive Committee, David Schmidt, Managing Director, Banque de Luxembourg Belgium discuss the challenges for Banque de Luxembourg, sharing, in particular, his vision for the company in the future and its commitment as a responsible economic player.

In an uncertain economic context, how does Banque de Luxembourg’s balance sheet look for 2022?

In an uncertain economic context, how does Banque de Luxembourg Belgium’s balance sheet look for 2022?

Despite the turbulent economic circumstances for the financial markets, the Bank’s income grew in 2022, with unconsolidated net profit of EUR 72 million, while our equity capital rose, strengthening all of our prudential ratios. We see this as a reflection of our strength and the trust our clients place in us.

Despite the turbulent economic circumstances for the financial markets, the Bank’s income grew in 2022, with unconsolidated net profit of EUR 72 million, while our parent company’s equity capital rose, strengthening all of our prudential ratios. We see this as a reflection of our strength and the trust our clients place in us.

United by the values that drive us, we look forward to enjoying the trust of our clients and all our stakeholders for many years to come.

How do you withstand economic crises and how are you preparing for future crises?

As an intermediary between savers and seeking finance, we are duty-bound to withstand crises and, at the same time, prepare for those in the future. During a period of turmoil globally, maintaining quality human relations with our private, professional and business clients is more important than ever. We do this by continuing to be a steadfast long-term partner to support them in their projects, by offering quality services and guaranteeing prudent management of our investments. This is the foundation of how we do business.

We consciously steer clear of fads, and we attach the utmost importance to risk management.

In concrete terms, how can a bank contribute towards social and corporate responsibility targets?

The many challenges facing the humankind represent an urgent call to adapt the way we operate in many areas. The defence of our freedoms and democratic systems is only one aspect, unexpectedly brought into focus by the invasion of Ukraine. More than ever, we must take responsibility, personally and collectively.

Our longstanding commitment to our community and our stakeholders is now being materialised in our decision to strengthen our corporate social responsibility.

Accordingly, we support the idea of “business for good”, which will enable us to monitor our commitments. This initiative is fully in line with the wishes of our shareholder, Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale, which opted for the status of Entreprise à Mission* in 2020.

In our role as an attentive company, we strive to maintain a balance between the interests of all our stakeholders, placing people at the heart of our concerns.

Because our purpose is only meaningful if we remain open to change and if we are mindful of the interests of future generations

What are your priorities for the coming years?

The planet is an ecosystem where everything is interconnected; no individual, company or country alone can succeed in meeting the great challenges facing all of humanity. Only collective action, the combined total of all our individual efforts, will enable us to turn threats into opportunities. We all have the capacity and responsibility for change.

In the face of the environmental and social emergency, we want to consider our planet’s scarce resources in all our activities so that later generations will inherit much more than just a financial legacy, but also a future brimming with opportunities.

In a rapidly changing world, our priorities are therefore clear: we aim to be a beacon of excellence for socially responsible investing and corporate social responsibility. As a business, we want to do all we can for our stakeholders to bring them real added value and while playing our part in solving the problems that affect us all. Consequently, we have redefined our roadmap by integrating the need for a sustainable and responsible approach for all of our actions and areas of activity.
