This year, because of the pandemic, the Luxembourg Cancer Foundation is holding its Relay for Life virtually, on 27 and 28 March - together and connected.
The mission of the Luxembourg Cancer Foundation, established in 1994, is to support patients and their families via a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, as well as prevent cancer through awareness campaigns and fund research projects, training programmes and bursaries.
Relay for Life – virtual, but still supportive
As part of its work to raise awareness among the general public and public authorities, the Cancer Foundation organises the Relay for Life, an annual race during which teams spend one day taking turns to run, walk or cycle around a track to symbolise the long journey of a cancer patient, with all its highs and lows. This year the pandemic has forced the organisers to be creative, and so the idea was born: the 2021 edition, scheduled for Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 March, will still take place, but virtually!
Participants will cover whatever distance they wish, when and where it suits them (woods, neighbourhood, office, school), but clocking up a total of 24 hours over the weekend. Selfies posted to the Cancer Foundation’s social networks will show their efforts, all aimed at demonstrating their solidarity with cancer patients. There will also be live streaming so people can watch the event’s best moments in real time.
In Luxembourg, close to 3,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year and it is estimated that more than 13,000 residents are living with the disease. We must continue to support patients, research and prevention. Lucienne Thommes, director, Cancer Foundation
Caring about people means caring about commitment
As a partner in this event since it began, and mindful of its responsibilities as an economic player, Banque de Luxembourg will once again be involved, providing not just financial support but also two teams of runners who will form a relay throughout the weekend. The teams will be raising funds that will be donated in their entirety to the Cancer Foundation to fund its various projects.
