Healthcare professionals: financial needs evolve over time - Interview with Charles Sunnen

Developing a specialisation, starting out as a hospital doctor, setting up your own practice, or building and then passing on a business... a doctor's career path is often anything but linear. In this interview, Charles Sunnen, Head of Liberal Professions, discusses the particular characteristics of this client group, the solutions Banque de Luxembourg offers and its ambitions in terms of support.

Q: Why did Banque de Luxembourg create a dedicated team for liberal professions?

Charles Sunnen: Banque de Luxembourg has always supported healthcare professionals in their capacity as private clients, mainly in the management of their personal wealth. But in recent years, growing demand related to their professional assets, both from young doctors and other practitioners further into their career, led to our decision to structure a dedicated offering and set up a team specifically for this client group.

Q: In practical terms, how do you cater for the specific needs of healthcare professionals?

CS: We offer two strands of expertise to match the professional and private needs of practitioners.

Our integrated approach enables us to provide targeted solutions tailored to the different stages of healthcare professionals’ careers.Charles Sunnen, Head of Liberal Professions & Corporate Business Development

On the one hand, we provide healthcare professionals with financing solutions to help them set up and develop their business, which may involve acquiring a property or refurbishing and equipping their premises. In parallel, we look after managing and growing their savings, with investment solutions tailored to their particular situation and objectives.

Q: How do you adapt the support you give your clients to the different stages of their career?

CS: We take a centralised approach so that every client has a single contact person who is able to deal with all their financial needs. The flexibility of the solutions we offer means that we can adjust our approach as the practitioner’s career evolves, whether they are developing a specialisation, starting out in practice or hospital, moving from salaried work to self-employment, or building up and then passing on their business.

Q: And how do you adapt the solutions according to their circumstances and needs?

CS: Our approach reflects the proactive way we work, anticipating the needs of healthcare professionals rather than just responding as and when issues arise. The solutions we put in place may be designed in conjunction with external partners to address complex matters, such as tax structuring, but we also factor in future moves such as establishing a partnership with colleagues, retirement and the transfer of private wealth.

Our mission is clear: to support healthcare professionals as a strategic partner at every key stage of their career.Charles Sunnen, Head of Liberal Professions & Corporate Business Development

Going beyond traditional financial services, Banque de Luxembourg’s approach is based on personalisation and a relationship of trust. Close collaboration with professional bodies emphasises our commitment to providing support tailored to the realities of the healthcare professions.

Q: In conclusion, how do you see your team’s work developing in the coming years?

CS: In just three years, our dedicated team has made its name as a key player in the support of the liberal healthcare professions in Luxembourg. We now have three experts on the team and we are seeing steadily increasing demand. So we're continuing to grow to meet the ever more diverse challenges ahead.

Our team is always ready to discuss your projects together.
