A new partnership to preserve biodiversity

Banque de Luxembourg has signed a partnership with the Fondation de Luxembourg to protect biodiversity and local freshwater reserves via the Fondation pour le Climat, an independent centre of expertise and advice in philanthropy, specially created to help corporate donors enhance their local impact.

A healthy mussel population indicates a well-balanced ecosystem

The project, established at the Moulin de Kalborn in the north of Luxembourg, was selected by a committee of scientific experts and is based on nature's ecosystem principles to offer a response to one of the critical environmental challenges facing Luxembourg and the Greater Region. It draws on the natural activity of the freshwater mussel and is the brainchild of the Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur, an expert in the management of natural reserves. Freshwater mussels are an umbrella species that play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy aquatic environment: as they extract food from the water, they filter out undigested particles that settle at the bottom of watercourses, thereby creating favourable living and breeding conditions for other species.

A healthy mussel population helps restore natural habitats and provides drinking water at a lower cost. This effective nature-based solution is an economically viable alternative to expensive water treatment facilities. The initiative is fully aligned with the European Union’s Water Framework Directive (WFD) and contributes to the sustainable management of local ecosystems.
